Paulette Michel Loftin, a Rochester attorney, is appointed by a district court judge to represent Ethan Crumbley, the 15-year-old charged in last week's mass shooting at Oxford High School.

Loftin confirmed the appointment to Elisha Anderson of the Detroit Free Press, but declined to say more.

"Because I do not have the [legal] discovery [results], I don't have any comment at this time," Loftin said Monday when asked whether there was anything she wanted to say on her client's behalf, the Freep reports.

Court-appointed attorneys are given to clients who can't afford to pay for one. Some come from public defenders' offices or from a list of defense lawyers who sign up for appointments.

Crumbley is charged as an adult and being held in the Oakland County Jail, as are his mother and father. They are all separated and under observation, the Sheriff's Department has said.
