Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has asked the U.S. Attorney's Office in Grand Rapids to investigate 16 Republicans who sent Congress signed certificates falsely claiming Donald Trump won Michigan's electoral votes in 2020, The Detroit News reports. State party co-chair Meshawn Maddock was one signer.
Nessel said during a Thursday appearance on MSNBC's "The Rachel Maddow Show" that forgery charges should be considered.
"Under state law, I think clearly you have forgery of a public record, which is a 14-year offense, and election law forgery, which is a five-year offense," Nessel said.
Similar phony documents were submitted to Congress by Republicans in four other states — Arizona, Georgia, Nevada and Wisconsin. It was part of an effiort to overturn Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory.
