Another child paid the price for improper stewardship of deadly weapons in Detroit on Friday.
A 3-year-old was critically injured when he or she found a handgun left in the pocket of a jacket that a visitor to the home had taken off, police say without giving the victim's gender.
According to police, a relative of the child took off her jacket and left in a room at an apartment in the area of E. Lafayette and Chene. Police said the woman, who is a concealed pistol license holder, had a gun in the pocket of that jacket.
The woman and the child's mother left the room. Several minutes later, they heard a shot and found the child with a gunshot wound, police said.
No arrests have been made, and police said the shooting "certainly wasn't intentional." However, he stressed that carrying and owning a gun has to be done responsibly.
