Snow day: Remote work and classes would be a good move Monday in Michigan

This week starts with a day tailored for Zooming online rather than zooming on four wheels, if forecasts are even half-right.

Morning commuter and school bus routes in Southeast Michigan are expected to be fine after relatively light snow Sunday and a new storm starting mildly after 8 a.m. But three to four inches more are expected by evening.

"Snow will impact the Monday evening commute," according to National Weather Service observers at the White Lake station in western Oakland County. The storm "will taper off to light snow showers or flurries after 8 p.m."

For those who can stay home, remote work or schooling is sensible for another reason besides pandemic caution on days such as the one ahead. In any event, some -- perhaps many -- school superintendents are likely to call a snow day four weeks into this already unsettled year.

Remote learning already is in place all week for public school students in Pontiac and Detroit, as well as those at Wayne State and Michigan State universities.
