A new filing by a lawyer for Adam Fox, facing trial in two weeks in the 2020 plot to kidnap Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, includes previously unknown facts about his life as an anti-government extremist, including Fox's fondness for legal Michigan weed -- and his concerns about diversity in the anti-government movement.

The trial brief filed by Fox's lawyer, Chris Gibbons, "contains many new details about the life and passions of Fox, who allegedly was concerned that the image of militias was associated with white male racists and that it needed to change to be inclusive," writes Tresa Baldas in the Free Press.

The paper reports that in a section of the brief called Facts, Gibbons writes:

"For many years 38-year-old Adam Fox had freely expressed his political views on various social media platforms, particularly Facebook. Fox identified with the “Boogaloo” movement," the brief states.

The movement's followers, the brief states, stressed the importance of gun rights, did not exclude anyone based on sexual identity, sexual preference or religious affiliation and "are not racist."

And the Boogaloo boys are concerned about their image:

During (a meeting in Dublin, Ohio), Fox stated that the militia was misunderstood, and that steps should be taken to address the negative perception that they are violent, destructive “domestic terrorists.”

Fox was the alleged ringleader of the group, and despite his concerns about their image, also referred to Whitmer as a "tyrant bitch" and allegedly spoke of wanting to "hog-tie" her and "put her on display," so there seems to be maybe a conflict there. Maybe weed made him mellow and reflective.

The story is full of fascinating material, including that on a planning trip to Wisconsin, Fox received a discount rate on a $49 hotel room, "due to his relationship with the president of the National 3% Patriot Militia — an informant who had arranged for the room."
