Huel Perkins, a Louisiana native, was in law school when he got lured into TV.  He went from a Baton Rouge station to St. Louis and then Detroit in 1989 where he started working at what is now Fox 2. The rest is history. On Friday, he'll retire at the same time as his longtime co-anchor Monica Gayle.

In a long-ranging interview with Deadline Detroit, Perkins, 67, talks about what comes after retirement, the ever-changing TV news business, his feelings about the parent company Fox News and Rupert Murdoch and Tucker Carlson, someone writing the N-word at his Birmingham home years ago, and who he thinks should succeed him.

Editor's Note: The video had a technical difficulty initially, which accounts for the static photo of Deadline Detroit's Allan Lengel for the first part of the interview.
