Detroit is stepping up its speed hump game to get zippy drivers to slow their roll.

Residential side streets around the city will get over 2,700 of the raised asphalt or hard rubber strips in coming months -- particularly near parks and schools, as well as on cut-through blocks near a major road.

The Department of Public Works got more than 20,000 requests for the "traffic calming" additions, the city says. Detroiters can check this 76-page alphabetical list to see if their street is among those selected.

Last year, 5,550 of the strips were installed on blocks with 25 mph limits. Selection criteria include police records of crashes and speeding tickets, housing density and number of school-aged children.

“Speeding and reckless driving have become a huge public health and safety concern," public works deputy director Dayo Akinyemi says. "Speed humps have been not only popular, but effective in reducing speeds in many residential neighborhoods."
