New school-related Covid cases affect over 40 students in Detroit and Wayne County

At least 10 Detroit students and 31 more in Wayne County suburbs tested positive for coronavirus last week, new data shows. Those affected attend 10 public and charter schools listed below. 

Twenty-five of Wayne's cases are in Canton Township, including a dozen students at one middle school.

These cases are among 35 clusters on a weekly state report of outbreaks involving at least three school-related Covid diagnoses. The Department of Health and Human Services rundown lists 229 infections among students and staff in elementary through high school grades statewide. No Oakland or Macomb schools are in the latest data.

Detroit's cases involve three public district buildings and a charter program run by a Chicago nonprofit: 

  • Foreign Language Immersion and Cultural Studies: 4 elementary pupils

  • Palmer Park Prepatory Academy: 3 cases (staff and elementary pupils; no breakdown given)

  • Plymouth Education Center (charter): 4 middle school students 

  • Vernor Elementary: 3 cases (staff and elementary pupils)

County cases involve five public district schools and a Canton school operated by National Heritage Academies of Grand Rapids:

  • Canton Charter Academy: 7 elementary pupils

  • Hamtramck: Dickinson East Elementary School: 3 elementary pupils

  • Canton Township: Discovery Middle School: 12 students

  • Canton Township: Hoben Elementary School: 3 pupils

  • Canton Township: Hulsing Elementary School: 3 pupils

  • Hamtramck: Wayne Tau Beta School: 3 elementary pupils
