Breadless sandwiches have a new flex that stretches beyond lettuce wraps.
A Detroit newcomer in the west-side University District serves sandwiches between large Kosher dill pickle slices. "Drop the bread, pick up a veggie instead" is the slogan of What's the Dill at 4088 W. McNichols Rd.
Nine varieties, including three without meat, cost $5 to $15. The menu also has a $12 build-you-own option with a choice of three meats, vegetables, cheese, dressing, toppings, seasoning and either lettuce wrap or a pickle as the sandwich covering. Three types of snack-size cucumber rolls also are in the lineup.
The takeout shop got a $25,000 boost Tuesday from Motor City Match as one of a dozen small business winners in the city program's latest round.
The business' website touts pickles as "a great source of antioxidant beta-carotene."
Pickles are also a rich source of vitamins, minerals and a low-calorie food. Great lunch choice for Keto dieters, diabetics and those wanting to eat healthy.
