Why isn't the Michigan GOP listening to Nolan Finley?

Those who read Edith Hamilton's "Mythology" in eighth grade English may remember Cassandra, the Trojan priestess whose fate was to speak prophecies that were always true, but never believed.

Today Nolan Finley, the Detroit News' editorial-page editor and one of the highest-profile conservatives in the state, published his umpteenth column warning the Michigan Republican Party that doom, doom awaits in November. But does anyone believe him? To judge by their actions, apparently not.

The Detroit News scribe writes:

No political party in this state has ever been handed such a rich opportunity. The GOP faces a Democratic party led by one of history's most unpopular presidents, topped in Michigan by a trio of incompetent incumbents. Add in voter rage over inflation.

And they've almost totally bungled it.

How? Terrible candidates. First, the gubernatorial primary field fiasco, with the leaders flaming out due to signature fraud on nominating petitions, which left voters with a five-person slate of what's-his-names and the pretty one. The pretty one, Tudor Dixon, a woman who's never held elective office and has a resume so thin she lists "mother" and "breast cancer survivor" among her notable qualifications, prevailed. But then, down-ballot, you have this:

Instead of smelling blood in the water, Republicans bloodied themselves, with the help of Donald Trump, who urged a purge of the "establishment" and stuck them with a pair of fanatical election deniers in Matt DePerno for AG and Kristina Karamo for secretary of state.

Regular readers of Finley have seen this column before. He wrote it in July. In May. In April. Actually, twice in April. And so on.

Finley hasn't entirely lost hope. He contends Dixon has a chance, but only if she cuts ties with DePerno and Karamo and finds a message that resonates with general-election voters. So far, the discussion of her platform has largely been about her anti-abortion stance, a hole she keeps digging herself deeper into. In recent days, she speculated that a woman or girl who carries a rapist's baby to term might find "healing" in the process

Finley may have just torn out the last of his hair.
