Former Congressman and ex-FBI agent Mike Rogers, a Republican U.S. Senate candidate in Michigan, says he won't try to mess with the state's legalized abortion, the Detroit News reports.
Rogers, 60, said during a stop Thursday at a DeWitt restaurant that he would not go to Washington and work against the will of the people in Michigan. Last year, Michigan voters passed a Constitutional amendment guaranteeing access to abortion.
The News reports:
"The people of Michigan have voted," Rogers said. "Abortion is legal in Michigan. And they have enshrined it in the ... state of Michigan Constitution."
He added moments later, "Will I go to Washington, D.C., and try to undo what the citizens of Michigan voted for? I will not."
Republicans have been trying to figure out how to deal with the delicate abortion issue without offending voters.
Some Republicans have suggested a federal ban on abortion, or at least one with tight restrictions.
