Money can often give candidates an edge in races.
In the U.S. Senate race in Michigan, Democratic Congress member Elissa Slotkin is far outpacing other candidates.
In the first three months of this election year, Slotkin posted $4.4 million in total receipts, spent $1.8 million and reported $8.6 million in cash reserves at the end of March, Melissa Nann Burke of the Detroit News reports. The campaign reported more than $345,550 in debt for consulting fees and media and direct mail productions.
That compares to the $3.8 million in total donations the four most prominent Republican candidates combined.
Republican businessman Sandy Pensler comes in second, behind Slotkin with $2.1 million cash on hand. The lion's share of that comes from Pensler loaning the money to his own campaign, the News reports.
The GOP frontrunner, former Congressman and ex-FBI agent Mike Rogers, raised just over $1 million last quarter and ended with $1.38 million in cash reserves, the News reports, citing his disclosure report.
Democratic candidate Hill Harper, an actor, businessman and community activist, had just over $441,300 in the bank as of March 31. Republican Peter Meijer, a former Congressman who voted to impeach Donald Trump, reported $314,734 in receipts, including $80,000 he gave his campaign, the News reports. He spent more than than he brought in, about $460,260, and finished the quarter with $243,967 cash on hand.
