Michael Lopez, 44, of Southfield, has been charged in the fatal shooting of Melvindale Police officer Mohamed Said, 26. He had previously served time for injuring another cop more than 10 years ago.

The deadly incident began on Sunday, around 12:30 p.m. at a car wash located near Oakwood Boulevard and Clarann Street, when the officer conducted a traffic stop on Lopez, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office said.

Lopez ended up fleeing the scene on foot. A foot chase ensued and Lopez allegedly pulled out a gun and fatally shot Said. Lopez was arrested on Monday in Detroit.

The Detroit Free Press reports:

The man charged with the killing of a Melvindale police officer this week injured another cop and was accused of taking his gun after a carjacking in Detroit more than a decade ago, court records show.

Michael Lopez, 44, was released from prison last month after serving about 12 years in that incident — just weeks before police would name him as a suspect following the shooting death of 23-year-old Melvindale Police Officer Mohamed Said.

Lopez faces charges this time of murder of a police officer, felon in possession of a firearm, felon in possession of ammunition, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a controlled substance-methamphetamine/ecstasy, possession of a controlled substance under 25 grams, carrying a dangerous weapon with unlawful intent and and five counts of felony firearm.

Michael Lopez arrested

He was arraigned Thursday before Judge Richard A. Page in 24th District Court.in Allen Park and is being held in jail. The next hearing is Aug. 12.

“Policing is one of the most dangerous jobs on the planet," said Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy in a statement. "The alleged facts in this case will show that this defendant callously gunned down and killed 23-year-old Officer Mohamed Said, who was just doing his job and had just begun his career in law enforcement. Tragic does not even begin to describe that happened here."
