Hoping to grab some attention during the Democratic National Convention, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on Tuesday came to Howell to speak at the Livingston County Sheriff's Department to a small crowd of invited guests.

But according to Paul Egan of the Detroit Free Press, he inflated the current crime numbers to try and make Kamala Harris look bad.

"Since Kamala Harris took office ... she's presided over a 43 percent increase in violent crime," said Trump. In actuality, the numbers are down.

He referred to it as the "Kamala crime wave" and her as "the most radical left person ever even thought of for high office, certianly for the office of president."

"They go after guys like me, but they don't go after people that kill people," said Trump, who is awaiting sentencing on 34 fraud counts in New York. He also faces criminal charges in three other cases.

The gathering included sheriffs, Congressman John James and Senate candidate Mike Rogers.

He also accused Harris of favoring defunding the police, something the campaign has denied, Egan reports.

Trump addressed the allegations made against him Monday night at the  DNC convention, saying people lied about his denigrating soldiers, Charlottesville and inflation. He referred to President Biden as a fool.

He was also asked by a reporter about coming to speak in Howell, the former KKK capital of Michigan, and where  last month a small group of demonstrators chanted, "We love Hitler" and "we love Trump." The Harris campaign criticized the Trump camp for failing to condemn that.

Trump responded:

"Who was here in 2021?" Trump asked the reporter, a reference to a visit to Howell that year by President Joe Biden, Egan reported.
