Former NBA Star Kevin Johnson Opening Soul Food Restaurant in Detroit on Friday

If you're an NBA fan, you'll remember Kevin Johnson, an All-Star on the Phoenix Suns. He was also mayor of Sacramento from 2014-15.

On Friday, Johnson and his wife Michelle will open "Fixins Soul Kitchen" in downtown Detroit at 1435 Randolph, between Gratiot and Grand River.

The website says:

Kevin Johnson and his wife, Michelle, founded Fixins to combine his love of Black culture and her obsession with great food.

Kevin grew up with soul food being the connective tissue of the broader Johnson family.  BBQs and reunions always featured Grandma Glady’s famous peach cobbler and competitions around who made the best collard greens or potato salad.  This restaurant is an homage to this amazing African American family and Johnson’s broader network of friends and associates by featuring all of their best recipes and family favorites.

There are three other locations: Los Angeles, Sacramento and Tulsa.

The Sacramento menu includes fried chicken, smothered chicken, fried fish, shrimp and grits, oxtail, gumbo, smothered pork chops, chicken and waffles, fried green tomatoes and fish nuggets. It also has vegan options including backened tofu and an Impossible burger.

Announced last August, Fixins originally planned an earlier-in-the-year opening at 1435 Randolph St. between Gratiot and Grand River in the Paradise Valley Cultural and Entertainment District area.

The area was formerly known as Harmonie Park and the Fixins space was once the home to two restaurants: Detroit Fish Market and Intermezzo.
