Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan has yet to reveal if he's running for re-election next year. He's also rumored to be considering a run for governor in 2026.

That being said, on Tuesday, former Detroit City Council president Saunteel Jenkins announced she's forming an exploratory committee for the mayor's race, Bridge Detroit reports.

Jenkins tells BridgeDetroit that the city is in a critical moment.

“Who our next mayor is matters,” Jenkins said. “That’s why I’m stepping into this. I believe I have something to give that can help all Detroiters thrive. Having been at the city council table during one of our most difficult times, I’m proud of what came out. I’m proud of the work we accomplished today because of it.”

Jenkins served on the council from 2010-2014 before leaving to become CEO of The Heat and Warmth Fund (THAW), a nonprofit organization that provides energy assistance to Michigan residents.

To date, City Council President Mary Sheffield and businessman Joel Haashiim have expressed interest in running for mayor.
