A 3-year-old boy Friday afternoon accidentally shot himself in the face with his mother’s gun on Detroit’s east side, police said. Charges are expected to be filed in the case.
Detroit Polilce Chief James White at a press conference described the wound as "graze," but said the boy was listed in critical condition.
The incident happened around 4:20 p.m. in the 11000 block of St. Patrick Street.
White said the mother had just come home from work and placed her gun on the dresser. Minutes later the boy picked up the gun and accidentally shot himself.
There were several other children in the home at the time.
He said that there was a lockbox for the gun in the home.
"Why the gun wasn't in there we don't know," White said, adding that the mother " left the gun in a position to cause injury to this child, so we're going to be looking at everything relevant at this point."
White said he expects criminal charges to be filed. "We we don't know what charges yet."
