Mary Sheffield makes her announcement Tuesday night.

Mary Sheffield, who started on the Detroit City Council in 2013, and eventually rose to president, made it official Tuesday night that she's running for mayor.

"What we've experienced in Detroit, this renaissance, this growth, has been about partnerships," Sheffield said at at a campaign event at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local Union 58 in Detroit's Corktown.

"It has been about a collective effort from our federal, state partners, philanthropic support, to really help move Detroit forward. I understand the importance of collaboration, and I am looking forward to working with all levels of government and in both parties to find common ground that will benefit the growth of our city."

She credited the late Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon with giving her an opportunity to work for the sheriff's department in the county jail and learn about people and their potential.

The event was attended by ministers and rabbis and supporters of hers including Judge Greg Mathis.

Sheffield is expected to run in the primary in a crowded field that will include former Council President Saunteel Jenkins, City Councilman Fred Durhal III and possibly state House Speaker Joe Tate and former Detroit Police Chief James Craig.
