Todd Perkins, a prominent Detroit attorney, says he's exploring a run for the mayor of Detroit.

"I’ll form an exploratory committee to take the temperature of the people of Detroit. It is something that I am considering, but I want to hear from the people. This City deserves strong, bold leadership and new focus. I’ll give my decision by MLK’s Birthday," Perkins, who heads the downtown Detroit law firm, Perkins Law Group, said in a statement.

Perkins could face a crowded field of candidates in the 2025 primary.

City Council President Mary Sheffield recently announced she's running to replace Mayor Mike Duggan, who plans to run as an Independent for governor in 2026. Others expected to make a run include former Council President Saunteel Jenkins, Michigan Speaker of the House Joe Tate and City Councilman Fred Durhal III.

Former Detroit Police Chief James Craig said he's also considering a run.
