Authorities said Wednesday that a 22-year-old man who fatally shot three people at a Sunoco gas station in northwest Detroit early Sunday morning will not be criminally charged, explaining it appeared he may have acted in self-defense.

"Under Michigan law, a person can use deadly force if they reasonably believe it is necessary to prevent imminent death or serious bodily harm to themselves or others," the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office said in a statement. "After a careful review of the facts and evidence, the (prosecutor's office) has determined that the warrant will be denied for insufficient evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the suspect did not act in lawful self-defense and in defense of others."

According to authorities, shortly before 3 a.m., there was a minor car accident between the driver’s vehicle and the gunshot victims’ vehicle.

The victims followed the driver to the gas station in the 21700 block of West McNichols Road and Lahser. The three victims exited the vehicle, approached the other car, opened the driver's door, and got into a physical altercation with the driver.

During the altercation, the shooter in the back seat fired his gun, killing the three people, who have been identified as Lester Owens III, 24, Jasmine Sheeler, 24, and Trevor Sheeler Jr., 19, all of Detroit, authorities said.
