A homeless man accused of drawing a swastika on Beth Shalom synagogue in Oak Park on April 19 gave Nazi salutes and acted out of control, spitting at the camera and shouting during his virtual arraignment Friday from jail, Fox 2 reports.

Justin Gorevitz, 51, faces a charge of malicious destruction of property of more than $1,000.

Fox 2 reports that he also drew antisemitic slurs and Nazi iconography on the exterior of the synagogue.

Police recognized Gorevitz from security video, Fox 2 reports. Court records show he has had a number of run-ins with the law, including arrests for assault and breaking and entering.

The judge in Oak Park's 45th District Court and the defense attorney agreed that Gorevitz should undergo a competency exam.

The judge set a bond of $50,000 for Gorevitz, who is being held in the Oakland County Jail.

A probable cause hearing is set for May 5.
