Julian Kevianne, 31, a Marine sergeant from Detroit, was among the 16 people killed Monday when a U.S. military plane crashed in Mississippi, the Detroit Free Press reports.

He joined the Marines in 2009 because he wanted to protect and defend the country, his brother Carlo Kevianne tells the Free Press.

The KC-130 air tanker was carrying members of an elite Marine special operations unit cross-country for training in Arizona when it crashed in the Mississippi Delta, the military said. The cause of the crash was under investigation, though no foul play was suspected.

"The Marines knocked on my mother's door at 2 this morning," Kevianne says. "They said his plane went down, and they weren't able to find him."

On Facebook, the brother posts: "I love you, bro. I miss you. Wanna just see you one more time."

The sergeant studied mechanical engineering at Michigan Technological University, his Facebook page says. He and Sherry Jennings married in November 2013, the social media page shows, and he began Marine flight engineer training thgreee months later.
