Video: Kilpatrick's Crimes 'Reprehensible,' But Term Was Too Long -- Michigan Gov. Whitmer

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, a former Ingham County prosecutor, knows about crime and punishment.

So, when asked Thursday on Fox 2 to weigh in on President Trump's decision this week to free ex-Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, she told Roop Raj: 

"The crimes that you know he was involved in were reprehensible. But by the same token the sentence was, I think, disparate. Anyone who's looked at things that were comparable, and sentences that were inflicted on folks, knows that he was treated differently."

Kilpatrick was sentenced to 28 years in prison in 2013 following a lengthy federal jury trial in Detroit. Some people in the community, including lawyers and judges, thought the sentence was far too harsh. Others thought it was appropriate, citing the scope of his crimes.

"People can decide for themselves if this is a just outcome, but I do think that when justice is not equal, it is not justice," Whitmer told the station. Her comments start around the 3:38 mark of this video:
