Executive Producer Scott Burnstein of Metro Detroit didn't expect much from Netflix. His documentary film "White Boy," based on the life of convicted Detroit drug dealer Richard Wershe Jr., won the "Audience Choice Award" at the Freep Film Festival in 2017.
After that, the reaction was ho-hum. The movie he made with documentary filmmaker Shawn Reich aired on Apple TV, Amazon Prime and Starz, but got little traction. Then early this month, Netflix started showing it, and it went viral. It even got a mention in the New York Times' films to watch. He was extremely pleased, to say the least.
There's not a price that you can put on exposure," he tells Deadline Detroit of the film's popularity on Netflix.
Burnstein, the author of six books, who runs the website "The Gangster Report," talks about the making the film and how the success on Netflix has opened doors in Hollywood where he hopes to make films and TV shows based on Detroit crime stories. (See the video below)
