Amer Ghalib, an immigrant from Yemen, defeated Hamtramck Mayor Karen Majewski Tuesday, making history by becoming the first non-Polish mayor in 100 years.

Meanwhile, Abdullah Hammoud, a 31-year-old state lawmaker whose parents are from Lebanon, defeated Gary Woronchak, a former state representative and past Wayne County commissioner, for Dearborn mayor. He becomes that city's first mayor of Arab descent.

Hammoud beat Woronchak 13,031 to 10,783 votes.

Hamtramck Mayor-elect Ghalib, a 42-year-old healthcare worker, beat Majewski by 3,232 to 1,485.
