Sunday at Citi Field in Queens was a reminder of the riches the Detroit Tigers once had.

Ex-Tigers' pitchers Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer helped lead the New York Mets to a doubleheader victory over the Cleveland Guardians.

In the first game, Scherzer pitched six scoreless innings and 86 pitches. The bullpen gave up four runs, but the Mets still won 5-4.  In the second game, Verlander pitched eight innings and 98 pitches, giving up one run. The Mets won 2-1.

For Verlander, it was a welcome change from last week when he gave up six runs in five innings against the Tampa Bay Rays and was booed by fans.

Despite the two pitching stars, the Mets haven't exactly been killing it.

They are 25-23 and are in second place in the National League East, trailing the first-place Atlanta Braves by five games.
