Following the Hamas attacks in Israel and the Jewish state's response, Michigan poltiicians have weighed in on social media and in public comments.
Here's a sampling:
Sen. Gary Peters (D)
I am horrified by the vicious, coordinated terrorist attacks by Hamas on innocent Israeli citizens. I condemn this terrorism — cruelly timed on Simchat Torah & during the 50th anniversary of the Yom Kippur War — in the strongest terms. We must continue to stand with Israel.
U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D)
I grieve the Palestinian and Israeli lives lost yesterday, today, and every day. I am determined as ever to fight for a just future where everyone can live in peace, without fear and with true freedom, equal rights, and human dignitity. The path to that future must include lifting the blockade, ending the occupation, and dismantling the apartheird system that creates the suffocating, dehumanizing conditions that can lead to resistance. The failure to recognize the violent reality of living under siege, occupation and apartheid makes no one safer. No person, no child anywhere should have to suffer or live in fear of violence. We cannot ignore the humanity in each other. As long as our country provides billions in unconditional funding to support the apartheid government, this heartbreaking cycle of violence will continue.
U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D)
I strongly condemn the truly horrific attack on innocent Israeli civilians by Hamas. My prayers go out to everyone impacted by this violence. The U.S. will continue to stand with our ally Israel.
U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell (D)
I unequivocally condemn the terrorist attacks in Israel and call for the immediate release of any hostages. I'm heartbroken for the victims and their families. I have long called for peace for the Israelis and Palestinian people. But these senseless acts of violence move us further from this goal.
U.S. Rep. John James (R)
Antisemitism is evil. Israel has every right to defend itself. Funding Iran on 9/11 was an incalculable error. I call on President Joe Biden to call out anti-semites and extremists in his own ranks and use every resource at his disposal, to hold the perpetrators of this attack accountable.
There must be no daylight between the United States of America and our friendship with Israel.
U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D)
I condemn in the strongest terms Hamas’ terror attacks on Israel, including the reported taking of hostages and door-to-door attacks on civilians. The scenes of violence are truly shocking, and I mourn the loss of lives with the families.
U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens (D)
I am devastated by this morning's surprise attack on Israel. The terrorist organization Hamas' targeting of innocent civilians is an act of war. The entire international community must stand with the Jewish state.
This is an attack on democracy and the Jewish people that is a grave violation of international law and global peace. Given this morning's attacks on the 50th anniversary of the Yom Kippur War, we must recommit to ensuring that the world's democracies stand together against terrorism. Unprovoked, unjustified aggression against innocent people cannot be tolerated. The threat against Israel is real.
Hamas made a grave mistake this morning. As these alarming events continue the United States must ensure Israel has the ability to defend its sovereignty.
U.S. Rep. Lisa McClain (R)
The brutal and savage attack by Hamas on Israel is disgusting and beyond reprehensible.
The United States must stand by our longtime friend and ally as they face war against terrorists, and we must fully and unequivocally condemn Hamas. We stand with Israel.
U.S. Rep. Shri Thanedar (D)
The recent attacks by Hamas in Israel deeply sadden me. I condemn these violent acts against the Jewish people and the State of Israel. My heart goes out to the families and victims affected. The calculated aggression targeting innocent civilians is heart breaking and cannot be tolerated. America stands firmly with israel, and I wholeheartedly support its right to defend itself. Congress must rally behind Israel until this threat is addressed and security is restored. In these trying times, we must remain united and work towards peace and safety.
