Flint Democrat Dan Kildee, who has served in Congress since 2013, announced Thursday that he won't run for re-election in 2024, a decision that opens up the possibility of a Republican capturing the seat. His 8th Congressional District represents Genesee, Bay and Saginaw counties and parts of Midland County.

"I saw myself continuing to serve and was actively planning another campaign but there are times in all of our lives when you reassess your own future and your own path forward and for me being diagnosed with cancer earlier this year was one of those moments," Kildee, 65, said in a video posted on X, former Twitter.

"Thankfully, earlier this year I had successful surgery and I'm cancer free but after spending time with my wife, my children, my grandchildren, contemplating our future, the time has come for me to step back from public office. Running for office ultimately is a personal decision first and this was not an easy decision for me."

Kildee had surgery on a  cancerous tumor in his tonsil.

He first held a public office at age 18, when he was elected to the Flint Board of Education in 1977.
