Detroit Rev. Charles Adams -- 'Prince of the Pulpit' -- Dies at 86

Longtime Detroit pastor, Rev. Charles Gilchrist Adams, who was known as "the prince of the pulpit," died last week, reportedly from pneumonia, CBS Detroit reports. He was 86.

The popular pastor spent a half century at Hartford Memorial Baptist Church on James Couzens Freeway in Detroit. He was a former member of the NAACP Detroit chapter executive board, and served as president in 1984, the station wrote in an obituary. 

"Charles Adams went home empty..because he gave it all to us and for that, we are very grateful," said the Rev. Wendell Anthony, NAACP Detroit chapter president.

A Detroit native, he earned an undergrad degree from the University of Michigan and advanced degrees from Harvard University.
