Deputies Fatally Shoot Man in Pontiac After High-Speed Pursuit

December 16, 2023, 2:20 PM by  Allan Lengel

Oakland County Sheriff's deputies fatally shot a 33-year-old man Wednesday night in Pontiac after a traffic stop turned into a high-speed pursuit, the Oakland Press reports.

Deputies were patrolling the Pontiac neighborhood at North Astor Street and North Pike Street at 9 p.m.  when they made a traffic stop for a silver four-door sedan suspected of being involved in a shots-fired incident at the Carriage Circle Apartment Complex over the weekend, the Oakland Press writes.

When deputies approached the car, the driver sped off. Deputies pursued at a high-rate of speed. Police were able to stop the vehicle near Westway and Benson streets, a neighborhood on the city’s east side, just south of M-59.

When the driver got out of the sedan, he abruptly turned toward deputies in what was described as a “two-handed posture,” and deputies opened fire, the publication reports.

The report makes no mention whether the man was armed.

He was pronounced dead at McLaren Oakland Hospital.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s special investigations unit is probing the matter.
