A Detroit police officer has been charged with manslaughgter that resulted from punching a 71-year-old man in the face during a Sept. 1 confrontation in front of a bowling alley on Woodward Avenue in Midtown Detroit.

Officer Juwan Marquise-Alexander Brown, 29, was charged in the fatal assault of Daryl Vance of Detroit, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office announced Tuesday.

The officer was dispatched to the Garden Bowl bowling alley around 6:50 p.m. because Vance was disorderly.

A verbal altercation escalated between the officer and Vance. The officer punched Vance in the face causing him to fall and hit his head on the pavement, authorities alleged.

Vance was hospitalized until his death on Sept. 21.

“Police officers frequently deal with citizens who are disorderly and verbally unpleasant," Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said in a statement. "But the evidence in this case shows that the officer allegedly was the aggressor, and his actions went criminally beyond what was necessary in this situation. This behavior cannot be tolerated from our law enforcement."

Brown is scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday in Detroit's 36th District Court.
