Days after announcing that General Motors will move its headquarters from the RenCen to the Hudson's Detroit Development downtown in 2025, Dan Gilbert's Bedrock firm on Wednesday disclosed that a five-star hotel, the city's first, will move into its mamoth structure and open in about three years.

The Detroit EDITION hotel will be accompanied by 97 condo units above it called "The Residences at The Detroit EDITION." Together they will occupy all 45 floors of the tower at 1208 Woodward Ave. The condos will vary from one- to four-bedroom.

The hotel is part of EDITION, a global collection of luxury boutique hotels conceived by noted hotelier Ian Schrager and Marriott International.

EDITIONS's website states:

No two cities are alike; Why should our hotels be? From New York City to Sanya, China, each property is designed to give guests a curated taste of the locale, reflecting the best of cultural and social miliieu. The result is a refreshing collection of individualized hotels (the anti-hotel chain), representing a new generation of luxury.

Dan Gilbert, founder of Bedrock, said in a statement: “Hudson’s Detroit is synonymous with excellence, style and grit, so it is only fitting that it will be home to legendary and iconic global brands. EDITION’S eagerness to enter the Detroit market and introduce its first property in the Midwest, is a true testament of how magnetic our city is today."

The announcement comes one day after the Detroit City Council approved $142 Million in tax breaks for 600-room hotel at the Joe Louis site on the river.
