Mayor Mike Duggan Victory Speech November 2nd, 2021 Election
Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan says he's putting off any announcements on his political future for the time being while he focuses on helping President Joe Biden win Michigan -- a state he expects to be a tough battle.
"Yeah, you know, I don't know at the moment," he says about his future plans in an interview with The Detroit News. "The presidential election is much tougher in Michigan for Biden than I had expected it to be. So I'm pretty consumed by trying to help the president get through this cycle. So I haven't focused so much on myself."
Duggan, 65, has often been mentioned as a possible contender for governor in 2026. He's in his third term as mayor. Some political observers say he's far more likely to run for governor than to go for a fourth term as mayor.
Asked what it is going to take for Biden to win the state, he responds:
"I don't know. You know, how good does the economy have to get? How much does crime have to go down? At least I think he's going to do extremely well in Detroit. Detroiters are enormously grateful for his personal interest going back to when he was vice president, when he was here repeatedly. So I know he's going to do very well in Detroit. What happens in the rest of the state? We're going to work hard at it."
He also addressed some who say Black voters may back away from the election.
"Yeah, pull up your newspaper two years ago, four years ago, six years ago, eight years ago, you made all the same predictions. So we'll see what happens. But I can tell you in Detroit there is enormous enthusiasm."
