Republican Matt DePerno, who lost his bid in 2022 to become Michigan attorney general, despite Donald Trump's endorsement, isn't through with politics.
Despite facing felony charges for allegedly mishandling voter equipment in the 2020 election, the Kalamazoo attorney announced Wednesday he's running for the Michigan Supreme Court, the Detroit News reports.
It's "clear that the Michigan Supreme Court needs members that are committed to following the constitution and rule of law," he said in a statement.
"Activist judges, prosecutors and attorney generals are using their power to prosecute their political enemies," DePerno said. "This has to stop. And that is why I am running for Supreme Court."
He'll seek the Republican nomination for one of two seats in this election.
On the Democratic side, Supreme Court Justice Kyra Harris Bolden, of Southfield, is expected to get the nod for one of the seats. She was appointed to the court by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in November 2022 and has to run for election this year.
DePerno lost to incumbent Attorney General Dana Nessel 53 to 44 percent in 2022.
