Republican Sandy Pensler never really had a shot.

The wealthy Grosse Pointe Park businessman has dropped out of the U.S. Senate race and endorsed primary opponent Mike Rogers, Crain's Detroit Business reports.

Pensler had run TV ads attacking Rogers and had spent $3.9 million of his own money on the campaign as of June 30, Crain's reports.

Other Republicans still in the race include former U.S. Rep. Justin Amash of Kent County's Cascade Township and Dr. Sherry O'Donnell of Stevensville.

Rogers, who has been endorsed by ex-President Donald Trump, is expected to face off against Democratic U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin in November.
